Commerce releases camera with facial recognition in SP – 04/29/2023 – Panel SA

Commerce in São Paulo put pressure on, and the City Hall is preparing for May the new call for bids for Smart Sampa, a program that provides for the installation of 20,000 facial recognition cameras throughout the city, with investments of R$ 150 million.

The Commercial Association of São Paulo and other entities in the field claimed the Municipal Court of Auditors for the resumption of the program.

The sector wants Smart Sampa to enjoy more security in street stores, especially in risk areas, such as the center, which scares away consumers with the dangers in Cracolândia.

It is the second attempt to put the monitoring plan into action. Initially, the edict was suspended.

The court had suspended the project for possible flaws related to the algorithm and violations of the General Data Protection Act – the system collects and records images of people. Between November 2022 and last week, the auditors and technicians made a series of recommendations, and now they give the green light to the implementation.

The initial expectation was to launch a project with investments of around R$ 70 million per year, but the values ​​—mainly for equipment— have since been readjusted.

With the public notice released, the city hall works with the new approved parameters. Around 20 security companies have already received the terms of reference for the project to submit proposals next week.
