A wave of cold caused the death of more than a thousand head of cattle in Mato Grosso do Sul and the expectation of the state government is that new notifications occur in the coming days, while the low temperatures remain.

Until this weekend, Iagro (State Agency for Animal and Plant Sanitary Defense) accounted for 1,071 deaths, recorded mainly in the southern regions and the wetland of Nhecolândia, in the west of the state — which concentrates 60% of cases.

Iagro director Daniel Ingold says that the deaths are associated with “low minimum temperature and very low maximum temperature, accompanied by rain, drizzle and wind”. “It is very likely that we will have new deaths for the next two to three days,” he added.

Last week, temperatures reached 7°C in the capital Campo Grande. For this Monday (19), the predicted minimum is 10° C, according to Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology). Corumbá must have the same minimum, in the region that concentrates most of the deaths.

In her social networks, Senator Teresa Cristina (PP-MS) lamented the “trace of sadness in the pastures, with more than a thousand cattle, many still calves, dead”. “Difficult time for affected rural producers, who will need support”, wrote the former Minister of Agriculture of the government Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), Mato Grosso do Sul had 18.6 million cattle in 2021, the fifth largest herd among Brazilian states. Corumbá had the second largest herd among the municipalities, with 1.8 million animals.
