In June 2024, scientists, students and civil society will gather in Brasília for the 5th National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation (CNCTI). After 14 years since the last meeting, the scientific community will participate in the meeting whose theme is “Science, Technology and Innovation for a Fair, Sustainable and Developed Brazil”.

And how important is it to have a conference like this?

This is an opportunity for the scientific community to debate topics of relevance to National Science, financing and science and technology policies. A major joint action between municipal, state and federal governments with the participation of society. The conference should create documents that could become guides for the public policies necessary for the sector, in line with the major themes and fundamental solutions to resolve major national issues.

We know that Brazilian science is diverse, has dozens of channels, works on important topics and can make a considerable connection with what is strategic for Brazil. A recent example of this installed capacity is the vigorous work, in collaborative networks, that was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in the first months, when institutions did not know the size of the problem that we would face and during the term of that government that denied the pandemic and its deadly effects.

For civil society organizations and interest groups to actively engage with the event, there is a construction process that will culminate in the 5th CNCTI. To this end, they are carrying out thematic meetings, free conferences, municipal, state and regional conferences. Institutions and governments, civil society organizations will be able to mobilize the necessary coordination that will be considered and will be part of the agreement on actions and recommendations for the formulation of the Ten-Year CT&I Action Plan 2025-2035.

SBPC comes holding meetings with the coordination team of the 5th CNCTI, with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE), in order to contribute to ongoing initiatives.

In addition to the important organization, which is already underway in a calendar of State, Thematic and Free Conferences that will take place until April 2024, there is a strong perspective of establishing a list of priorities for science and with science, in addition to pointing out important paths for the creation of public policies in various sectors, the economy, health and the environment, among other sectors. A very interesting format is free conferences, which presuppose the organization and discussion of topics that are not covered or that require in-depth study.

There will be 11 thematic meetings planned by the general coordination of the 5th CNCTI, with great participation from important entities, such as SBPC and ABC, Confap, Confies, as well as various organizations such as Finep, CGEE, among others, which are already carrying out very interesting activities and necessary.

Among the state conferences, we had some that have already taken place, such as the one in Pernambuco, with the participation of our SoU_Ciência in the data presentation (link). We are participating in the São Paulo State Conference, which will take place between March 7th and 8th. To the state conferences are being organized in partnership with the State and Federal District Governments – see details HERE.

SoU_Ciência will hold two Free Conferences until the end of March and beginning of April, with the following themes: “The Future of the University and its Role in the Future of Science”.

The themes will be developed to discuss the “Role of Universities in solving the country’s major issues”; the “Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic in the mobilization of various academic and social sectors”; “Training Platforms and Information and Data Panels for Networking”; the “Public Perception of Science: Society Speaks and the importance of listening for proposing Public Policies”; “Social Movements and Citizen Science”.

We will talk more about them soon.

Our participation, community and society, in this process is strategic for us to build proposals that strengthen the production of knowledge and the formulation of public policies on science, technology and national innovation. They are fundamental elements for a sovereign country based on the construction of a society for knowledge and with knowledge.
