Climate hinders and reduces soybean productivity Reproduction/TV TEM The soybean harvest has already started, but the crop is not yielding much. The weather didn’t help and almost all states will produce less, including São Paulo. For producers, it is important to take advantage of days without rain to advance the harvest. Productivity fell a lot this year, and this lower performance has to do with the same climate that, ironically, helped so much in the previous harvest. In areas with irrigation, the result is better, but it is still well below expectations. The expectation in the Paranapanema region (SP), for example, was to obtain an average of 60 bags per hectare, but in this first phase only 20 were harvested, which is around 30% of what was expected. On a 300-hectare soybean plantation in the municipality of Salto Grande (SP), it harvests, on average, 20 bags per hectare, which is a higher performance than before. Furthermore, a lot of soybeans from the last harvest are still stored in warehouses. The National Supply Company (Conab) predicts an increase of more than one million tons in domestic consumption this year, and a drop in exports. The company does not rule out the risk of difficulties in feeding chicken, beef and pig farms. If there is no longer much that can be done in relation to productivity, the producer hopes that prices will cooperate. With fewer offers, the expectation is that soybeans will increase in value in the coming months.
