Joana Mocarzel, Clarinha from “Páginas da vida”, a soap opera that was re-aired last year on the Viva channel, took another step in her acting career. Now 23 years old, she was approved at the SP Escola de Teatro, run by the government of São Paulo, and celebrated the news on social media.
Along with the announcement, Mocarezel shared a text that she herself wrote to be approved in one of the selection stages. In it, the actress reports that she suffered prejudice in college for having Down Syndrome.
“My role in the world is to overcome prejudice. As I have down syndrome, I studied at Dante Alighieri College, I suffered prejudice from some girls that I know very well and in fact I am very challenged and my challenge is to achieve several goals and win the down syndrome biasstarted.
“Being at SP Escola de Teatro is very important for me. It’s to show people that I have my stamina and strength. I feel very happy doing theater. I love performing for people, memorizing texts and playing characters. I believe that I am very much an actress, a real star and it is my dream to be at SP Escola de Teatro”she continued in the text.
She ended the essay talking about her determination. “What I like most about myself is being who I really am. I always do beautiful things and I like to see myself in the mirror. I’m very determined and I’m proud of myself. I have a lot of ability to like myself and be like myself. I am without prejudice, doing my work with that greater pleasure. I feel very perfect and very muse and my commitment is also very great. I always do everything with the greatest love of myself.”
Joana continues to work as an actress, but says she never received invitations to soap operas again.
“No more invitations came up, but I would really like to do a soap opera. I think there are still opportunities missing, yes. In my opinion, there is still a lot of prejudice and misinformation about Down Syndrome,” she said in a recent interview with last year.
After the end of “Páginas da Vida”, in 2007, she continued doing theater. She acted in the play “Reizinho mandão” and took the children’s course at Teatro Escola Célia Helena. Currently living in São Paulo with her parents and sister, Joana finished high school, does dance and speaks English.
“I was going to start the Performing Arts degree in 2020, but the pandemic suspended that plan. I want to be a great actress and continue my career as a digital influencer on Instagram, especially to show my followers that a person with down syndrome leads a life like any other. I’ve been trying to use my Instagram to show that I lead a normal life. I think it’s important to deconstruct the misinformation that many have about Down Syndrome”, he said at the time.
