City of São Paulo reaches 20 thousand cases of dengue – 02/24/2024 – Health

The city of São Paulo has reached 20,036 confirmed cases of dengue since the beginning of this year, according to data updated this Saturday (24) by the SES (Secretariat of State for Health) monitoring panel.

The number represents just over a fifth (21.6%) of the total records in the state of São Paulo (92,615) in this period. It is also more than six times higher than the total number of cases in the last five years (3,072) in the municipality.

Throughout São Paulo, there are already 17 confirmed deaths from the disease and another 90 under investigation. The capital continues with one confirmed death and 19 being investigated.

In the capital, cases of dengue with alarming and serious signs represent 1%, on average, of the total number of confirmed cases (200). In the state, the percentage is slightly higher, at 1.58% (1,460).

Dengue with an alarm signal are situations in which, even after the fever ends, patients continue to experience abdominal pain, vomiting or bleeding from mucous membranes.

In severe dengue, patients experience respiratory failure, severe bleeding or severe organ damage.

The majority of deaths in the state (five) occurred in municipalities in the Taubaté region. Next come those from the Bauru and Greater São Paulo regions, with three, and those from the Marília region, with two.

The regions of São José do Rio Preto, Ribeirão Preto, Franca and Barretos each recorded one death.

At least 11 cities in São Paulo have declared an emergency due to the increase in dengue cases. They are: Registro, Iepê, Marília, Botucatu, Jacareí, Pindamonhangaba, Pederneiras, Bariri, Guararema, Suzano and Taubaté.

According to SES, the São Paulo government transferred R$205 million to the 645 municipalities in São Paulo to combat arboviruses, including dengue.

The secretariat also informed that the Army will work together with the Civil Defense to eliminate mosquito breeding sites Aedes aegypti, transmitter of the disease. However, it has not yet announced the number of military personnel and in which municipalities they should operate.

In Brazil, the Federal District is the federation unit with the highest dengue incidence rate and number of deaths from the disease.

The region has 2,938 probable cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in addition to 35 confirmed deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The local government, however, counts 38 deaths and states that another 72 are under investigation.

In total, the country has 762,542 probable cases and 150 deaths, according to an update from the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel this Friday (23).

The ministry estimates reaching 4.2 million cases in 2024, in the worst scenario for the disease, but says that the period in which Brazil will reach the peak of dengue circulation is still uncertain.
