The works deal with the environmental and social impacts of large hydroelectric construction projects in the country

Manaus (AM) – The Cineclube de Arte will hold a double program, which brings together two Brazilian documentaries: “O Reflexo do Lago” by Fernando Segtowick and “Sobradinho” by Cláudio Marques and Marília Hughes, which will be screened respectively on June 3 and 10, 2023, at 6:30 pm, at Cineteatro Guarany, located at Avenida Sete de Setembro, 1546, Downtown.

The double program with a similar theme was named “After the deluge”, since, in the midst of the pressing debate on sustainable alternatives (and with lower economic cost) to traditional energy matrixes, the two works, still restricted in their dissemination, rescue the agenda of how human beings, with their own needs, can negatively impact the environment.

The film “Reflexos do Lago” records the daily lives of people who live near one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world, in the Amazon. In the shadow of this environmentally destructive project, they live with scarce resources, without electricity or infrastructure, being a portrait of the social contradictions and environmental neglect that the country faces. The documentary, from 2020, is 72 minutes long, free classification and will be shown on the 3rd.

In ‘Sobradinho’, which takes place in the 1970s, a dam and a hydroelectric plant were built in the city that gives the film its name. The government at the time, commanded by the military regime, thought that would be the ideal place for those constructions, because there would not be much resistance from the residents. Thus, 73,000 people were displaced, thus being one of the largest forced migrations in the history of Brazil. The documentary lasts 70 minutes, is free for all audiences and will be shown on June 10th.

“This type of initiative is very important because of the cultural exchange it brings. Our goal is to give people free access to films that are being produced independently throughout the country”, explains Thiago Morais, an Audiovisual Producer who is involved in the dissemination of films.

The Cineclube de Arte is a project of the Government of Amazonas, carried out through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy. The initiative aims at valuing Amazonian culture, in addition to attracting a larger audience to cultural spaces and bringing this approach to this artistic environment.
