Brazil takes advantage of the post-pandemic Carnival to fall into revelry. Right. But let’s be honest? There are a good part of Brazilians who take advantage of their days off to really lie on the couch. If this is your little pad, prepare the popcorn we made a list of gastronomy movies (there’s a series too) for you to marathon on these days off.

To prepare this list of gastronomy films, we had the help of some people who are passionate about the area, such as journalist and content creator Andre Bezerra, as well as readers of Good Gourmet – that poll on Instagram paid off, my people. Now, let’s go to the list of gastronomy movies!

The menu

This was recommended by the public, chefs and some movie lovers. Well-evaluated by critics, but outside the Oscar 2023 competitors, the film takes place in a haute cuisine restaurant, located on an exclusive island. All the action takes place during dinner for a select list of guests. The kitchen is run by the famous and mysterious chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). In a mixture of suspense, terror and humor, the film directed by the British Mark Mylod criticizes the haute cuisine market, its consumers and investors. Anya Taylor-Joy, from Cambito da Rainha, is one of the central characters in the plot. Owhere to see: Available on StarPlus.

Stomach

This nomination is from journalist and writer André Bezerra. Filmed in Curitiba, Estômago is a Brazilian classic of gastronomy films. “How to live in Curitiba and not talk about Estômago. A national film with a brilliant plot and an identical cast, pulled by the inimitable João Miguel (cook Raimundo Nonato) and Fabíula Nascimento (prostitute Íria). It is one of my favorite films not only for the theme, but for being what I call true art cinema.” That was André’s answer to our question about the gastronomy film he recommends. 100 steps from a dream

This recommendation came from businessman Divaldo Maciel, husband and partner of chef Vânia Krekniski, from the Limoeiro restaurant. The film tells the story of an Indian family that moves to a small town in the south of France and opens a typical Indian restaurant in the region. The establishment, however, is next door to an award-winning French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Traditional, she doesn’t like the new scents and sounds brought by her Indian neighbors. Gradually, however, she is won over by the talent of the young cook Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) and the wisdom of the patriarch Papa Kadam (Om Puri). “It’s good to see, one of those films without commitment”, warns Divaldo. chef

Chef is another movie to cry a little at the beginning and smile at the end. The recommendation is from chef Alê Gonçalves. “I’ve seen it about ten times and I’m always moved,” he says. As in O Menu, here there is also a critique of haute cuisine and the distance from essential cuisine – that made to satisfy hunger with tasty food prepared with authenticity. But, in Chef, the writers took a much lighter and more fun path. If you like it, then it’s still worth enjoying The Chef Show series, a spin-off of the film. In the program, the actor and protagonist of the plot, Jon Favreau, cooks and receives friends. Where to see: The film and series are available on Netflix.

Burnt – Catching Fire

This one was also nominated by readers and chefs – and friends. Starring Bradley Cooper, Burnt tells the story of chef Adan Jones. After ruining a restaurant due to drink and drugs and spending a period of self-penitence opening oysters, he heads to London to try to redeem himself and earn three Michelin stars. It’s a drama with all the classic ingredients: it has an arrogant central figure, romance, ghosts from the past, revenge and a cute child. Surrender yourself to the emotion, you will like it. The pictures of the preparation of the dishes are beautiful. Where to see: Available on Netflix, Telecine, Amazon Prime and Paramount+.

Ratatouille

Who is a fan of animation there raise your hand! Around here, we are (the one who writes here loves Finding Nemo). Therefore, Ratatouille could not be left out of this list. The indication came from the readers of the Good Gourmet and we signed underneath. The Disney Pixar film tells the story of Remy the mouse who dreams of being a great chef. But how to do that being a mouse? He finds a way and launches the cook Auguste Gusteau to the status of star of gastronomy in Paris. One of those films that pleases children and adults and is always worth revisiting. Where to watch: DisneyPlus.

julie and julia

This is another indication from the public of the good gormet (and it could be a nomination from the author too because it’s my favorite food movie). The film is based on the life of Julia Chield (played by Maryl Streep) and on the book of the same name from the plot (I also recommend it) by author Julie Powel. In parallel, the film narrates the year in which Julie (played by Amy Adams) challenged herself to reproduce more than 500 recipes from the classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking and shows how Julia Chield’s journey as a gastronomy star began. Babette’s Feast

Classics are classics. And Babette’s Feast is a classic, one of those that always appear on lists of gastronomy films. This Danish film from the late 1980s is a reverence for classic French gastronomy. The film tells the story of Babette (Stéphane Audran), a French woman who moves to a small village in Denmark, where she starts to work cooking and cleaning for two spinster sisters. After 14 years, Babette wins a lottery prize and spends all the money on a dinner for the sisters and the local community. Where to see: youtube

The Bear

It’s not a movie, but it’s here on our list because there were many nominations for this series. The Bear tells how chef Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) tries to restore order and save the family diner from bankruptcy, left to him by his brother who committed suicide. “It’s so real it’s cruel,” says businessman Divaldo Maciel. The episodes are short – about half an hour – and have the same frenetic pace as the everyday life of a busy restaurant. Where to see: Star Plus.
