Elon Musk has reached out to artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the Information reported Monday, citing sources with direct knowledge of the effort.
The head of Tesla and Twitter is recruiting Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who recently left Alphabet’s DeepMind AI unit, the report said.
The billionaire, who co-founded OpenAI with Silicon Valley investor Sam Altman in 2015 as a non-profit startup, left his board in 2018 but echoed his take on the chatbot, calling it “scary good”. .
Musk and Babuschkin discussed assembling a team to conduct artificial intelligence research, but the project is still in the early stages, with no concrete plans to develop specific products, the report said, citing an interview with Babuschkin.
The researcher added that he has not officially joined the initiative with Tesla’s CEO, according to the Information.
Sought by Reuters, Musk and Babuschkin did not respond until the text was published.
