ChatGPT: Caetano questions CEO about payment to artist – 05/17/2023 – Tech

Singer Caetano Veloso questioned the chief executive behind ChatGPT, Sam Altman, how artists will be remunerated for the use of cultural productions in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Altman responded that he agrees that creators should be paid, without specifying how.

The organization received the executive from the AI ​​startup OpenAI this Wednesday (17) to discuss the impact of this technology on Brazil.

Altman spoke about paying artists for the use of intellectual property and changes that technology can bring in education, journalism, cybersecurity and design, according to Lemos.

In testimony to the US Senate on Tuesday (16), the OpenAI executive said he supports the creation of an international regulatory framework for AI. He cites the experience of the International Atomic Energy Agency to mitigate nuclear risks as an example.

Altman has been repeating the idea since 2021, when he published an essay on advances, challenges and possible catastrophes that technology will bring to the world. The executive compares the impact of AI to the creation of the internet and atomic weapons.

For the chief executive of OpenAI, this regulation needs to be balanced, since there is a double interest: protecting society from the risks of this development, without destroying local competitiveness. The United States competes for dominance of technology with China, which, for example, applied AI solutions with better results in social networks, when it developed TikTok.

Altman also asked about the Brazilian bill to regulate artificial intelligence, presented by Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) on the 4th. According to Lemos, the US executive was not aware of the bill’s content.

For the chief scientist of ITS-Rio, the project is dated because it was formulated before the launch of ChatGPT last November.

The OpenAI executive told event participants that he spoke with the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), about measures to improve public service with AI. Paes has said that he intends to transform the Rio de Janeiro capital into an innovation center.

This Thursday (18), Altman will give an interview to computing researcher and activist Nina da Hora at the Museum of Tomorrow, in Rio de Janeiro. The event is promoted by the Lemann Foundation and supported by the Rio City Hall.

He also discussed the risk of cyber-attacks accelerated by generative artificial intelligences with security expert Ilona Szabó, a columnist for Sheet, co-founder and president of the Igarapé Institute. Technology can facilitate not only the creation of scams based on social engineering, but also the development of malicious programs.

Former São Paulo Secretary of Education Alexandre Schneider and the founder of the Camino education group, Fernando Shayer, questioned Altman about the effects of artificial intelligence on teaching. ChatGPT has been generating discussions about plagiarism and new pedagogical methods since it gained popularity.

Altman even commented that humanity is “one big idea away” from artificial general intelligence, when machines will be able to create new ideas, as people do. Therefore, it is urgent to be prepared, according to the chief executive.
