Cars: almost 50% of households have cars in Brazil – 06/16/2023 – Market

Cars are present in almost half of Brazilian households, while motorcycles are part of the routine of a quarter of households in the country.

The conclusions are from a survey released this Friday (16) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

In absolute terms, the number of households with a car rose from 34.9 million in 2019 to 36.9 million in 2022. The increase was 5.8%.

The number of households with a motorcycle went from 16.8 million in 2019 to 18.6 million in 2022. The increase was 10.2%.

In percentage terms, households with cars went from 49.4% to 49.8% in the period. The most recent level is the highest in a historical series that began in 2016.

Among motorcycles, the proportion rose from 23.8% in 2019 to 25% in 2022. The latest level represents another record in the series, in addition to signaling a greater increase (1.2 percentage points) than that for cars (0 .4 percentage points).

The data are part of a version of the Pnad Contínua on the characteristics of residents and households. In 2022, the survey estimated the number of households in the country at 74.1 million.

Part of the PNAD collection was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Therefore, the comparison of ownership of goods is made between 2022 and 2019.

Motorbike beats car in the North and Northeast

Households in the South had the highest percentage of car ownership among the regions in 2022 (69.2%). The Northeast (29.9%) and North (30.7%) recorded the lowest proportions of this good.

The two regions also stand out for having higher percentages of motorcycles than cars. The proportion of households with motorcycles was 35.3% in the North and 33% in the Northeast.

In the Southeast, 56.4% of households had cars in 2022. The proportion for motorcycles was 18.8% in the region.

In 2023, the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government is betting on a price reduction program to stimulate the automotive industry and the sale of popular cars. Automakers have already announced discounts.

70% of households have a washing machine in Brazil

The IBGE survey also indicates that the percentage of households with a washing machine in the country rose from 65.8% in 2019 to 70.2% in 2022. The most recent proportion is the highest in the historical series with data since 2016.

The percentage of households with a refrigerator went from 98.1% in 2019 to 98.4% in 2022. It is also the highest percentage in the series.

Less than half of Northeastern homes have a washing machine

In 2022, only 41.1% of households in the Northeast had a washing machine. In the North, the proportion was 55%.

The highest percentage of homes with the equipment was found in the South: 89.3%. Southeast (81.8%) and Midwest (80.2%) complete the list.

The South also had the highest proportion of households with a refrigerator in 2022: 99.5%. Southeast (99.2%), Midwest (98.9%), Northeast (97.5%) and North (94.5%) appear later.
