Manaus (AM) – One of the most traditional Carnival events in Manaus, Carnaboi, will be held on February 25th and 26th in 2023, at the Sambódromo.

The party is a mixture of carnival and toadas, the rhythm of Amazonian folklore, which can be seen every year at the Parintins Festival and the Amazonas Folk Festival.

“This year we are going to do it right after, on the 25th and 26th, Friday and Saturday, here at the Sambódromo. We will be doing Carnaboi with 35 artists”,

said the secretary, Marcos Apolo Muniz.

Carnaboi is one of the great cultural manifestations present in the carnival in Brazil, little known in other regions, but of great beauty and richness for the Amazon region.

The warm-up for Carnaboi will take place on the 12th and 22nd of February, at Largo do Mestre Chico, located on Avenida Sete de Setembro, with performances by artists from the North region.

With the theme “Carnival in the Forest”, this year’s party involves at least 20 thousand direct and indirect workers.

“There are artisans, painters, locksmiths, seamstresses, people who push the floats. And then add to that a whole production chain that is related to Carnival, as is the case of street vendors, app drivers, and many other professionals”, argued secretary Marcos Apolo.

History of Carnaboi

Manaus Carnival mixes traditional rituals with Amazonian folklore. With a diversified program, Carnaboi features the figures of the oxen Caprichoso and Garantido, historical rivals in Parintins, in addition to them there are also presentations of the oxen-bumbás Brilhante, Corre-Campo and Stallion.

The story of the ox-bumbá is part of the folklore of the North region. According to legend, a pregnant woman gets the urge to eat beef tongue. Her husband, trying to fulfill his wish, kills an ox on a farm, but is arrested for the crime. Upon losing the beloved ox, the owner of the farm summons healers and shamans to resuscitate it. The ox came back to life, and the whole community celebrates with a big party. The couple still receives forgiveness from the owner of the ox.
