Campo Grande Hospital installs swimming pool to baptize patient – 04/08/2024 – Balance and Health

A task force set up at Santa Casa de Campo Grande (MS) made it possible to fulfill the wishes of a 79-year-old patient admitted under palliative care. He wanted to be baptized in a religious ceremony that required a swimming pool and made the request over three days to the medical team.

After reporting the difficulty in fulfilling the desire on social media, doctor Fernanda Romeiro, palliative care practitioner and coordinator of the special care, rehabilitation and hospital medicine line at Santa Casa, received guidance on the doctrinal principles of the patient’s religion and understood the need for the pool .

For the religious rite to take place, the palliative care team counted on the help of other sectors of Santa Casa, such as the hygiene team and civil firefighters. The baptism took place on Thursday (4).

“It was possible to do exactly what we proposed. Trying to minimize and heal suffering, in this case spiritual suffering”, said the doctor. The patient’s family was distressed by the difficulties in carrying out the baptism and, according to the specialist, care is also aimed at those close to those who are hospitalized.

The man is in advanced clinical condition and discharge would not be possible. That’s why there was a mobilization of several sectors to carry out the baptism in the hospital itself.

Palliative care is indicated for patients with serious, progressive, chronic and potentially fatal illnesses. The idea is to offer well-being, controlling physical and emotional symptoms.

Professionals understand death as a natural cycle, without anticipating or postponing it. The term is used for a multidisciplinary approach.
