Campos Altos should be the next region of Minas Gerais to request recognition of geographical indication in the denomination of origin modality for coffees produced there.

The region, located between the plains of western Minas Gerais and next to the Canastra, Saudade and Salitre mountains, has mountainous relief, an average altitude of 1,100 meters and is between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes.

On the 25th, the Campos Altos Region “territory brand” will be launched. This is the first step on the path to requesting registration of the designation of origin from the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property).

According to Sebrae-MG, which assists the Campos Altos Coffee Growers Association in this process, the request to INPE must be made by the end of the year, but there is no forecast of when the entity will grant the approval.

Also according to Sebrae, Campos Altos coffee has an aroma and flavor of chocolate, molasses, caramel and red fruits, with high sweetness and citrus acidity.

The designation of origin is a seal that designates a product whose qualities are due to the geographical environment, such as what occurs in Europe with sparkling wine from the Champagne region, in France, or parmigiano reggiano cheese, in Italy.

Other coffee regions in Minas Gerais have already received the INPI approval, such as Cerrado Mineiro, Matas de Minas, Mantiqueira de Minas, Sudoeste de Minas and Canastra.

ILLY LAUNCHES COFFEE FROM CERRADO MINER GROWN IN REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

The Italian illy, one of the most traditional companies in the sector in the world, launched a coffee produced exclusively in the Minas Gerais cerrado using regenerative agriculture practices, which allow the soil to naturally regenerate and reduce CO2 emissions.

The new Arabica Selection Brasile Cerrado Mineiro has notes of caramel and dried fruits and is available in 250g cans in grain and ground versions (R$ 56.00), both on the brand’s ecommerce (illy.com) and in supermarket chains selected.

The product, the result of a partnership between the Italian giant and the Federation of Cerrado Coffee Growers, will be available in several locations around the world later this year, with a forecast of reaching 140 countries by 2024.

Founded in 1933 in Trieste, illycaffè is one of the largest companies in the sector and serves around 8 million cups a day in the more than 140 countries where it is present.

The Minas Gerais cerrado is one of the most traditional coffee growing regions in Brazil. It was even the first to receive the designation of origin (DO) seal for coffee in the country.

SANTO GRÃO LAUNCHES NEW MICROLOTS

The Santo Grão coffee shop launched two new microlots with very different sensory profiles.

The Rapadura microlot is a grain of the red catuaí variety grown in Matas de Minas and, according to the company, reached 90 points on the sensory evaluation scale that goes from 0 to 100 – a score considered quite high, therefore. It has notes of rapadura, molasses, caramel, nectarine and citrus fruits.

Yeast is a micro-batch fermented using the anaerobic method and has notes of malt, spices, hazelnuts and red and purple fruits. Fermentation techniques are growing a lot. Fermented coffees tend to have more exotic notes, which has attracted the taste of some consumers.

The two new coffees can be purchased via Santo Grão e-commerce, in 250 g packages (R$62 for Rapadura; and R$59 for Levadura), or consumed in any of the coffee shop’s units – there are six in São Paulo and one in Curitiba–, in a special tasting (R$ 28) in which both lots are served.
