Brazil’s music market will grow even more in 2023, but what will the artist do when it comes to revenue division?

Report from Pró-Música, an entity that brings together the country’s main record companies, points to an expansion of 13.4% last year and places the national industry above the global average for the seventh year in a row. ♪ OPINION – Pró-Música Brasil – an institution that represents the main record labels and record producers in Brazil – released the annual balance of the music market last Thursday, March 21, with encouraging results in relation to 2023. At least for the music industry. If the global report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFFI) showed annual growth of 10.2% in the phonographic market worldwide, Pró-Música found that the phonographic industry in Brazil expanded 13.4% throughout 2023 , compared to the previous year. In plain English, the national phonographic market grew above the global average – a fact already observed for the seventh consecutive year – and was once again among the ten largest global markets in the world, having earned 2.9 billion reais in 2023. Of this total, nothing less than 2.5 billion reais come from streaming revenue, representing 87.1% of the music sector’s revenue. And this is where the most relevant question comes in: what does the artist look like in this scenario of market expansion? The (only) raw material of streaming platforms is the music made by composers, singers, instrumentalists, arrangers, producers, sound engineers. In other words, without this chain of professionals who drive the music industry, there is no music, no audio players, no revenue. So, if there are songs (by the thousands) and if there are recipes (by the millions), there is an urgent need for the cake to be divided fairly. And this is the question that cannot be ignored: is justice being done in the remuneration of professionals who make music on a daily basis? The answer can only be given by the artist, the one who knows how much falls into the bank account with each single, each EP, each album released on the millionaire platforms. Let the floor be given to those most interested in the issue, the artists!
