Brazilians leaving Gaza could happen this Sunday, say Planalto sources

The government believes it will be able to evacuate Brazilians waiting to leave the Gaza Strip this Sunday (15), according to a minister and another senior assistant to President Lula. The attempt must be made in the morning. The biggest difficulty is ensuring the safety of people in the region south of Gaza and also in Egyptian territory close to the border. A group of Brazilians asked for help from the Lula government to leave Gaza. The region has been the target of Israeli bombing since last week, after the terrorist group Hamas carried out attacks on Israeli territory. Hamas has bases in Gaza. The only viable exit route is the Egyptian border. Once in Egyptian territory, a plane from Brazil would receive the group. But Egypt has shown resistance to opening the border with Gaza. President Lula spent the day talking to authorities about opening a window of time for Brazilians to leave through the Rafah crossing. Lula spoke, for example, with the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi. Other foreigners may also leave — this is what negotiations with Egyptian and Israeli authorities indicate. The Brazilian presidential plane, sent by the government for the mission, will land at Arish airport (Egypt) when the crossing is authorized. Brazil also does not rule out giving rides to people of other nationalities, as there are 40 seats on the aircraft, and the Brazilian group is smaller than that. Lula set up a crisis office in Alvorada, where he is already meeting face-to-face with advisors. Lula underwent hip surgery two weeks ago and, on medical advice, had been avoiding contact. This Saturday (14), the special international advisor, Celso Amorim, the Minister of Communications, Paulo Pimenta, and other close advisors spent the day following the negotiations. Lula also spoke to Brazilian ambassadors in the region.
