The Decanter World Wine award, one of the most important in the world of wines, awarded gold medals to Brazilian wineries Amitié and Ferreira in this year’s edition, released this Wednesday (7).
Held in London, the competition evaluated around 18,000 labels from 57 countries, with the help of 236 judges. Participants could take bronze, silver, gold and the highest distinction, platinum – achieved by 124 producers.
Amitié’s award-winning label, from Serra Gaúcha, was the white wine Viognier, one of the most recent launches in its catalogue. It costs R$99.80 on the Amité website.
It is the first monovarietal (wine made with only one grape) in Brazil to receive a gold medal at the DWWA. In its description, it presents itself as a white wine with “fruity notes, reminiscent of peach and tangerine, and a delicate touch of white rose petals”.
Amitié winery was founded by oenologist Juciane Casagrande and sommelière Andreia Gentilini Milan in 2018. In addition to still wines (those without bubbles), the winery also produces sparkling wines, which were the flagship in its early years. They started with five labels and, today, the line is made up of ten.
The wine awarded by Vinícola Ferreira was the red Piquant Soléil Syrah, which costs R$ 288 on the brand’s website, in the 2020 harvest. The profile, according to the award, brings aromas of cherries and spicy spices.
The winery is located at an altitude of more than 1,600 meters on the mining side of the Serra da Mantiqueira. It is only ten years old and receives visitors by reservation for lunch.
