Brazil starts requiring visas from foreign tourists – 01/03/2024 – Tourism

Starting next Wednesday (10), tourists from the United States, Canada and Australia will need a visa to enter Brazil. Issuing the document will cost US$80.90 and must be done online, on the website brazil.vfsevisa.com. For American citizens, the validity is 10 years, and for Canadians and Australians, 5 years.
The document requirement comes back into force almost five years after being abolished by decree by then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in March 2019, in an attempt to promote foreign tourism in the country — which did not happen. At the time, Japan also benefited from the decree, but a bilateral agreement signed in August exempted citizens from both countries from needing visas for short-term stays (up to 90 days).
According to Itamaraty, the visa requirement for entry into Brazil is based on the principle of reciprocity. In other words, it only happens because these countries also require visas from Brazilian citizens.
“It is important to highlight that the Brazilian government renews its interest in negotiating, with the three nations, visa exemption agreements based on the principles of reciprocity and equality between States,” said the Ministry of Tourism in a statement.
Also according to the organization, the USA is the second largest source of tourists to Brazil, behind only Argentina. In the first 10 months of 2023, 530,690 North Americans visited Brazil (11% of the total). In the same period, we received 66,338 Canadians (16th largest emitter) and 38,544 Australians (17th largest emitter).
