With 180 new factories in the country, Brazil now has 1,729 breweries, according to the 2022 Beer Yearbook, an official report released this week by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The increase of 11.6% was practically the same registered in the previous year (12%), which indicates a certain stability in the brewing sector.

For Gilberto Tarantino, who lends his surname to Cervejaria Tarantino and currently chairs Abracerva (Associação Brasileira de Cerveja Artesanal), this growth “shows the maturity of micro, small and medium-sized breweries and the entrepreneurial power of the craft brewer.”

“We continue to grow, we are increasingly present in the national territory and moving the local economy. The huge number of products and brands also illustrate the innovation power of this segment”, he completes.

They are counted as new places that produce the beer. That is, taproom does not count — taprooms are places that have fresh beer taps, but do not manufacture them at the address, such as Empório Alto dos Pinheiros or Trilha Fermentaria.

The main brewing state in the Union, São Paulo has 387 breweries in this measurement, with 47 new factories. Rio Grande do Sul is right behind, with 310 (25 more in the year).

The novelty on the podium was Minas Gerais, which, with 33 novelties, reached 222 and surpassed Santa Catarina, now in fourth place, with 215. Paraná (fifth, with 161) and Rio de Janeiro (sixth, with 120) are the other states that surpassed the barrier of one hundred breweries.

However, Santa Catarina still has the best ratio of factories to inhabitants, with one brewery for 34,132 inhabitants. São Paulo is sixth in this account, with one brewery per 120,540 people.

Also according to the Yearbook, the Federal District, Amapá, Alagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Roraima and Tocantins did not open any breweries in 2022. The Southeast region is responsible for almost half of the factories in the country, with 46.2 %; followed by the South region, with 39.7%.

Among the most brewing municipalities, Sorocaba stands out, with 18 factories. The city in the interior of São Paulo is ahead of the traditional Ribeirão Preto (17), Blumenau (16), the city baptized as the capital of beer, and Petrópolis (13), another place also known for its brands.

In this topic, the capital São Paulo leads with 59 breweries. Porto Alegre (42) and Curitiba (26) complete the top 3.
