Electronic cigarettes gained 690,000 new fans (one in Aracaju, Sergipe) this year and the country already has 2.9 million smokers, equivalent to the population of the Federal District.

This is what the most recent IPEC research on the topic shows. In six years, the incidence of so-called vapes or e-cigs jumped from 0.3% of the population to 1.8%.

According to the survey, the expansion of this type of cigarette in Mato Grosso do Sul drew attention, where smokers went from 1.8% of the population to just 4%, an increase of 122% between 2023 and 2022.

The state was followed by Goiás (up 107%), Minas Gerais (100%) and Paraná (32.4%).

In the Federal District, there was a drop of 18%, but it is the place with the highest incidence of devices per inhabitant (one in every 4.5).

While Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency) debates whether to maintain the ban or regulate consumption, the clandestine market has established itself in the country.

A study carried out by Fiemg (Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais), estimates that the market generates R$ 7.5 billion per year. Most of the goods come from China and Paraguay. In taxes alone, the Union loses R$2.2 billion and the country creates 110,000 jobs.
