Brazil breaks record and carries out the largest rescue of victims of slave labor in the countryside for the first half of 10 years

As for the Pastoral Land Commission, the increase in rescues demonstrates that supervisory bodies are more attentive to the issue. One of the cases of great repercussion this year occurred during the grape harvest, in February, when 207 workers were found in degrading work situations, in the municipality of Bento Gonçalves (RS). They were hired by the company Fênix Serviços Administrativos e Apoio à Gestão de Saúde LTDA, which provided services to three large wineries in the region: Aurora, Cooperativa Garibaldi and Salton. Grape plantations are considered permanent crops, the 2nd largest rural activity with victims rescued (331) from work similar to slavery, in the 1st half of 2023. They were only second to sugar cane plantations, where 532 people were rescued . One of the major operations took place in March, in Goiás, when the MTE caught 212 workers in degrading conditions, on sugarcane farms that ranged from the south of Goiás to the city of Araporã, in Minas Gerais. Almost 527 thousand people were involved in these conflicts, which represents a small drop of 2% compared to last year. With regard only to conflicts over land, the pastoral states that 878 families suffered from the destruction of their homes, 1,524 from their fields and 2,909 from the destruction of their belongings. The CPT also said that the biggest causes of violence in the countryside were farmers (19.75%), federal government (19.33%), businesspeople (16.95%), state governments (13.31%) and land grabbers (8 .54%). Violence against women Violence against women in rural areas has been growing since 2021, according to the CPT. In the 1st half of this year alone, there were 107 registrations. According to the institute, the highlight was the rape of 30 Yanomami teenagers by miners in February. Other cases are of women who suffer from intimidation (20), death threats (16), aggression (6), criminalization (5), false imprisonment (5), among others. “Remembering that the same person can suffer more than one violence in the same incident”, reinforces the Pastoral. In this type of approach, there was a significant increase in the number of victims: from 418 in the 1st half of 2022, to 779 in the same period of 2023. The damage caused by pesticide contamination leads this type of violence (327), as well as contamination for ores (55). Another highlight is the increase in cases of criminalization (45) and detention of people involved in the fight for rights in the countryside (42), even though actual imprisonment has decreased (from 74 to 29).
