The book “Manaus and its cemeteries – Stories of Lives and Legacies” rescues a significant part of the memory of the city, from the Campos Santos

Manaus (AM) – A book signing marked the launch of the most recent work by historian Etelvina Garcia, “Manaus and its cemeteries – Stories of Lives and Legacies”, on Thursday (10), at 7 pm, at the Rio Negro Palace, on Avenida 7 de Setembro , Center. The publication has the support of the City of Manaus, through the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult) and its Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura).

The author Etelvina Garcia is on her 26th work and, during the presentation to the public made up of writers, researchers and students, she spoke from the research conception to the challenge of reporting the history of the city of Manaus from its cemeteries and the legacies of the people who they rest in the holy fields.

“The owners of this land are our indigenous ancestors, especially the Tarumã people, who suffered the invasion of Europeans here from 1657”,

highlighted the author.

“We also report the episodes of the periods of epidemics and pandemics, with great demonstrations of humanity of some personalities that are in the book”, he revealed.

For the president of Concultura, Tenório Telles, to preserve the memory of a city is to save from oblivion the contributions of the men and women who helped, with their deeds and actions, to build the public space and the history of a place.

“That’s what Professor Etelvina Garcia’s book represents. Rescues from the silence of the past the memories and life stories of the inhabitants of Manaus, from the cemeteries that welcome those who completed their life journeys. ‘The Cemeteries of Manaus’ is a fundamental work for a better understanding of our cultural experiences”,

Present at the launch, the renowned researcher and infectologist Marcus Barros avidly read the book by his teacher, author of the work.

“First of all, the emotion that touches me, because Etelvina Garcia was my science teacher exactly 65 years ago. So, throughout this period, I follow her production, which is intense. But this new work surprised me a lot, approaching the cemeteries, the history of the city, teaching us what Manaus is and who inhabited this city”,

The book “Manaus and its cemeteries – Stories of Lives and Legacies” is the result of research by historian and writer Etelvina Garcia, who rescues a significant part of the city’s memory, from the Campos Santos.

According to Concultura’s cultural director, Carlos Guedelha, this is a well-documented book, illustrated with photographs and rich in detail, whose text is an invitation to read, due to the fluidity of the language combined with the mastery of the written word, in a valiant effort research by the author.

From the first edition, the works will be distributed by the Municipal Secretary of Education (Semed) in schools, and in the municipal library João Bosco Pantoja Evangelista, in the Congress square, Centro.
