Bolsa Família includes one million families and breaks a record for the amount paid to beneficiaries

Manaus (AM) – It is with him that the rural worker Maria Francilene, 25 years old, guarantees diapers, chicken at the grocery store and clothes for Marcelo, her almost three-year-old son in the small Garrafão do Norte, a municipality of 26 thousand inhabitants in the northeast of Pará. Solo mother Adrielly Pereira Silva, 19, relies on him to change the menu at Pérola, two years and 11 months old, in the mining town of Jequitinhonha.

The certainty of a minimum of R$600 and R$150 more per child up to six years of age is synonymous with security and dignity for Francilene, Adrielly and the other 21.2 million Bolsa Família beneficiaries. The Federal Government’s income transfer program starts the May payment this Thursday, the 18th. The calendar continues until the 31st.

Records

This month, the average amount paid across the country in Bolsa Família is the highest ever. They are BRL 672.45, above the BRL 670.49 recorded in April. The program is in 5,570 municipalities in the country and, this month, the total amount paid by the Federal Government amounts to R$ 14.1 billion: it is the highest in the history of the income transfer program.

BRL 150 to 9 million

Bolsa Família guarantees a minimum of BRL 600 and an additional BRL 150 for each child aged zero to six in the family. In May, there are more than 9 million children from zero to six years old entitled to R$150, like Pérola and Marcelo.

“It means extra to guarantee something extra for my daughter. They are better quality meats and a diversity of fruits”,

says Adrielly.

“The R$150 I leave to pay for his little things. The R$ 600 goes towards electricity and household expenses”, explains Francilene, while visiting a grocery store next to her house to buy chicken breast.

Essential

A resident of Manaus, Jéssica Lesses is the mother of two daughters and lives with her mother in a rented house. She splits between a temporary job as a commercial analyst, studying to look for better opportunities and taking care of the girls. For her, Bolsa Família is an essential complement.

“After this update, income increased and we were able to buy those items that we needed to remove from the cart. Needs never end: we need to eat, dress, feed, live. Without Bolsa Família, it would be very difficult”,

he said.

Regions

The Northeast is the region with the most members of Bolsa Família. There are more than 9.7 million families in the nine states. For this, the Federal Government’s investment is R$ 6.3 billion. The average benefit paid in the region is R$ 664.38.

The Southeast comes next. There are 6.33 million families. Transfers exceed R$ 4.25 billion and the average amount in the four states is R$ 672.32. Next come the North (2.59 million families in the seven states), the South (1.43 million in the three states) and the Midwest (1.13 million in the three states and the Federal District).

ANDstates

São Paulo leads the list of Bolsa Família beneficiaries. There are more than 2.579 million in the state, with an average benefit of R$678.25 and an investment of R$1.74 billion. Next come seven states with more than one million families covered: Bahia (2.5 million), Rio de Janeiro (1.82 million), Pernambuco (1.67 million), Minas Gerais (1.62 million), Ceará (1.49 million), Pará (1.35 million) and Maranhão (1.23 million).
