Based on the novel by Milton Hatoum, the show “Dois Irmãos” premieres in May

The show “Dois Irmãos”, inspired by the work of the same name, by the Amazonian author Milton Hatoum, premieres on May 2nd, and runs until May 26th

Manaus (AM) — In a season with 12 sessions in Manaus, with the support of the Municipality of Manaus, through the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), the show “Dois Irmãos”, inspired by the work of the same name, by the Amazonian author Milton Hatoum, opens on May 2nd and runs until May 26th, always at 7pm. Signed by the group “Menina Miúda Produções Artísticas”, the show will be presented at Buia Teatro, located at Rua Dona Libânia, 300, Centro, close to Largo São Sebastião.

This is the first time that the novel has been produced and starred by Amazonians. The director-president of Manauscult, Osvaldo Cardoso, comments on the importance of representativeness in a regional work.

“The novel has already been adapted for TV and theater by professionals from São Paulo. The work was written by an Amazonian author, and set in Manaus. “Dois Irmãos” being starred and produced by Amazonians shows how we have great artistic potential in Manaus, and we do not need to seek representation in other capitals, as we have this in abundance with our artists”,

said Cardoso.

In “Dois Irmãos”, the author portrays the conflicts of a family in the midst of Manaus in the 20th century. At the center of the novel are two brothers, Yaqub and Omar. Their relationship is marked by tension and rivalry, which ultimately results in a tragedy that changes the course of their lives.

Writer Milton Hatoum, who recently participated in a chat about the play in Manaus, celebrates the new adaptation for the theater.

“I am very happy with the creation of the show. It is a generous act to adapt a novel for the stage. And it’s not easy to adapt. Deep down, this is not a mere adaptation. It is a recreation, or, as concrete poets would say: a “transcreation”. From the original text, a translation is made of what you imagine of the new language”,

says the novelist.

Editing director Cairo Vasconcelos explains what motivated him to adapt Hatoum’s work for the stage.

“I started looking for references from my land, from Amazonas, from Manaus, something that I could approach even more and have more mastery of speaking in the theater. And also, what motivated me was the political moment that we are living, Milton Hatoum’s work immerses me and pleases me, because I can see the Manaus of the book, which has not changed in certain situations: the issues of disorderly growth and forgetting the history of Manaus itself. It’s also a family conflict, despite all that, and it strikes me, I like family conflicts, and the family has never been more in vogue.”

In the first week, there are sessions on days 2, 3 and 4; in the second week, on days 9, 10, 11; in the third, on the 16th, 17th and 18th; and in the last week, on the 24th, 25th, and 26th.
