Opera Latinoamérica conference chose Manaus for its first meeting in Brazil to discuss the future of opera

Manaus (AM) – Starting this Wednesday (17th), Manaus will host the 16th Annual Conference of Ópera Latinoamérica (OLA), an event that takes place for the first time in Brazil and seeks to expand dialogue on challenges in production, management models and co-production possibilities and circulation of opera in Latin America.

The program starts on Wednesday, from 3 pm to 5 pm, with a guided tour of the Teatro Amazonas, which marks the arrival of the participants. Names of expression in the artistic, cultural and economic field will be present, among which, the Head of Creative Economy at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington (USA), Trinidad Zaldivar; the president of the Brazilian Academy of Music (ABM), André Cardoso; the artistic coordinator of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, Nikolay Sapoundjiev; the Board of Directors of the National Arts Foundation (Funarte); secretaries of culture, tourism and national and international press professionals. as well as representatives of Ibero-American opera houses.

The executive director of the Amazonas Opera Festival, Flávia Furtado, considers the event a great sign of prestige for the Festival. “In 16 years of existence of Ópera Latinoamérica they have never come to Brazil and it is the biggest OLA meeting of all time since its foundation. In Manaus, in the North, outside the Rio-São Paulo axis. This is proof of the prestige and recognition that Teatro Amazonas and Festival Amazonas de Ópera have in the international market”, points out Flávia.

There are more than 100 professionals confirmed at the event, among the guests there are also professionals who do not belong to Ópera Latinoamericana but also theaters in the United States, Europe, it is the first time that OLA opens up to a market that is not its own, that is, to non-members.

“There will also be representatives from the Brazilian market who are not yet from OLA, other theaters and symphony orchestras who have not yet joined, in addition to the secretary of culture of Minas Gerais and the secretariats of culture from Pará and Rio Grande do Sul”, he adds. the director of the Amazonas Opera Festival.

Programming & Dialogues

The process of building OLA’s programming was done together with members of Ópera Latinoamérica (OLA). “One of the guidelines that we identify is that nowadays, in the 21st century, there is nothing that is not questioned. So, one of the aspects that we were concerned with was creating discussion tables on how to defend opera and our opera houses, today, in the 21st century”, highlights Flávia, who considers the questions valid.

She also informs that one of the guidelines, when setting up the schedule, was to create opportunities for interaction between members and their theaters, exchange of experiences, exchange of ideas, these being the priorities of the event.

Technology and Opera

The event’s program includes workshops, business circles, panels, round tables and, of course, the presentation of opera works. Innovation and the future of the arts through a digital approach are also part of the debates.

“Themes related to technology are fundamental nowadays. Opera is a living genre and is part of the world we live in and is influenced by this world as well. So, as we are in the century of technology, it cannot be different: technology will affect operatic work today”, concludes Flávia.
