Artificial intelligence: Pacheco wants regulation by July – 01/19/2024 – Market

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) stated that he hopes to approve a regulation of artificial intelligence in the country by the middle of the year.

“I think it works. The project is relatively simple, it was designed by a commission of jurists”, he told journalists in Zurich during an event with Brazilian businesspeople. He highlighted the importance of having these guidelines before starting the campaign for the municipal elections in October.

Brazilian and foreign experts fear that the technology will be used, in different countries, to forge recordings and images that could deceive the electorate. The topic was one of the focuses of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, which ended this Friday (19), and raises concern from multilateral organizations such as the UN.

On Thursday (18), Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT, raised the need for regulation in a panel in Davos, but asked for parsimony so that there is time for the technology to develop further.

The senator also defends regulation due to the potential negative effect of so-called generative AI on everyday life. “Customs, relationships with people. Relationships between couples, between friends. Between co-workers. Between boss and employee. Between institutions, he said.

“We have to discipline this artificial intelligence, otherwise we can lose control,” he said.

Pacheco also dealt with giant technology companies and defended the remuneration of journalistic companies for the use of their content by the platforms.

The proposal was part of the fake news bill, which was analyzed last year, but is dormant after doubts grew about the risks to freedom of expression.

Pacheco, however, rejects the idea that the proposal encourages censorship. “It was important for us to discipline this. Fight anonymity. Fight these robots. Give responsibility. Put it in the CPF. People are attacking each other. On social media.”

The senator intends to return to both the topic of fake news and the remuneration of journalistic content by platforms, together or separately, and approve laws in this regard by the middle of the year.
