With more than half of its audience formed by women, transport apps have launched initiatives for female passengers who are victims of violence.

Strategies emerged during the pandemic to attract the millions of passengers who switched from public transport to using a car using an app.

99, which has more than 12 million passengers in its customer base, offers up to R$15 off on trips to the nearest women’s police station. In the first three months of this year, according to the platform, more than 13,400 trips were made using the ‘delegaciadamulher’ voucher. Last year, there were over 40,000.

Ana Verroni, 99’s marketing director, says that the initiative emerged in 2020 to encourage reporting cases of violence and abuse and help women to get out of vulnerable situations.

“With the increase in cases of domestic violence, throughout the pandemic, the company expanded and, currently, the platform has more than 500 Women’s Police Stations mapped in the app”, he says.

Through the app, victims of violence can also ask for help from the Justiceiras project, which brings together a multidisciplinary team for support and guidance. “Any woman can request help from the Justiceiras’ support network if she is suffering physical, psychological, moral, sexual and patrimonial violence”, says the platform.

Uber, with more than 30 million male and female customers, says it offers in-app tools to make passengers feel safe, such as audio recording and calling the police, and is involved in projects that address gender violence. .

In partnership with the Avon Institute, Uber pays for the trip to police stations, hospitals or support networks for women who ask for help via WhatsApp (11) 94494-2415.

If violence or abuse occurs during a trip through the platform, the victim who reports the fact to Uber support can have up to four sessions, of one hour each, with psychologists from MeeToo Brazil.

BlaBlaCar has “Just for Them”. The application’s filter allows its more than 7.4 million passengers to choose to travel only with female drivers.

The same option can be made by 99 drivers. According to the company, on average, 20 million trips are made with the 99 Woman button activated. Currently, 99.5% of the 750 thousand drivers are women.
