Anvisa denies ban on Cannabis flowers – 7/1/2023 – Cannabis Inc.

It is a fact that cannabis therapy has become synonymous with CBD (Cannabidiol), although it is not the only substance in the plant, just the most researched and popular among patients – mainly in the form of drops. A cannabis it has more than 150 elements, which interact with each other, and depending on the treatment, together they produce a faster effect on the organism. Therefore, there are cases where doctors indicate flowers in place of oil.

The efficiency of flowers is undeniable, so much so that Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency) has a specific ordinance (RDC 660), which authorizes their individual importation. Recently, this therapeutic possibility has become the subject of discussion among businessmen in the sector, who feel themselves harmed by cases of illegal practice.

The great dissatisfaction is the amount of irregular advertisements on social networks, which indicate the possibility of importing flowers, through RDC nº 660, for recreational use, despite the fact that the permission is valid only for medicinal purposes.

In a note to BRCann (Brazilian Association of the Cannabis Industry) had already expressed concern at the beginning of the month: “In the context of recreational use, it is worth mentioning that what concerns us, in a concrete and urgent way, is the apparent deviation from the purpose of the RDC nº 660/2022, from Anvisa, regarding the importation of flowers of cannabis with a doctor’s prescription”.

This week the entity returned to discuss the topic, which, in fact, divides the group. On the one hand, there are Members who do not work with the importation of flowers, but with CBD oil, and are fighting for the ordinance to be overturned, since this type of misconduct compromises the image of the sector in general. On the other, a more moderate group, which works with CBD and flowers, which only asks for more supervision.

This week, all sorts of rumors have been aired. There has been talk of the police apprehension of flowers of cannabis in medicinal companies until cancellation of 660. Anvisa denied the possibility of patients losing this access route, but in a note highlighted the possibility of regulatory improvement.

When searched by cannabis incthe agency replied: “Nevertheless, this norm, like all other Anvisa regulations, is inserted in a context of constant regulatory improvement, which is in accordance with the role of the agency for the protection and promotion of the population’s health, by intervening in the risks arising from the production and use of products and services subject to health surveillance.”

It is noteworthy that misuse of purpose can only be fought with strict supervision and not with measures that put an end to important achievements of patients in the search for the right to treatment.

“The peak of medication taken orally occurs in half an hour”, says Francisney Nascimento, professor of Clinical Pharmacology at Unila. “When the cannabis is inhaled or smoked, the action is practically instantaneous, which helps a lot in the treatment of pain and epilepsy.”
