ANTT (National Land Transport Agency) approved this Thursday (6) the public notice for the concession of a stretch of BR-381 between the cities of Governador Valadares (MG) and Belo Horizonte (MG), according to a statement from the agency.

The concession is for 30 years, with a forecast of more than R$ 10 billion in investments, and the auction is scheduled for the last quarter of this year, said the municipality, without citing an exact date. The announcement will be published in the Official Gazette of the Union on Friday (7), according to ANTT.

The TCU had approved the concession project in early June.

Part of the concession’s investments will go towards reducing risks and expanding the capacity of the highway, “one of the busiest and most dangerous in the country, with a high rate of accidents and constant congestion”, according to ANTT.

History of BR-381

1952 – The stretch of highway between Belo Horizonte and João Monlevade was paved.

1959 – The connection between Belo Horizonte and Pouso Alegre took place on a single track during the Juscelino Kubitschek government.

1990 – The duplication of the northern section of the BR-381 began with Law nº 9.277/96, which transferred Union assets to the states.

1998 – The governor of Minas Gerais, Eduardo Azeredo, signed an agreement with the then president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, which provided that the state would carry out the duplication between Belo Horizonte and João Monlevade and a third lane to Ipatinga. The funds would come from the recently completed privatization of Vale do Rio Doce.

1999 – During former President Itamar Franco’s administration in the state, the highway ended up being returned to the Union.

2009 – President Lula, in his second term, included the duplication of the stretch in phase two of the PAC (Growth Acceleration Program).

2014 – First service order for the duplication, already in the Dilma Rousseff government. Thus, the highway was divided into 11 lots, of which seven were auctioned.
