This is the formula that led personal trainer Kennedy de Sousa, 29, from Angola, to go viral on social media.

Motivation arose due to something that recurs in gyms: mistakes, which affect the work of muscles and can lead to injury.

“At no point are people taught about issues related to academia and, when they are, many end up getting confused because there is no consensus among professionals in the field. Some say to do one thing, others say to do another, which creates many doubts about what is right to do”, says Kennedy in an interview with the blog #Hashtag.

He claims to have been interested in the scientific side of bodybuilding for over ten years and became certified as a personal trainer in 2021. He does the entire content creation process himself: idea, research, script, filming and editing. Before publishing, he asks his wife or sister for their opinion, to make sure the message is educational.

Kennedy began publishing videos on Instagram in November 2018, first in English, as he had just returned from England, where he studied economics and finance — it is in this area, in fact, that he currently works, with academia and videos being an alternative source. of income.

At the beginning of 2022, he focused on the Portuguese-speaking audience, created a profile on TikTok and started publishing videos every Sunday. It reached its current success formula in November 2023, after being inspired by tiktoker Tyler Path. “I realized, from the comments, that his videos are not always clear. I already had experience in this two-character format, and I started to show the adjustments that the person should make when performing the exercise”, he says.

His flagship is Instagram, where he has 756 thousand followers. On TikTok, he has 267 thousand followers, but the algorithm is more unstable. The Angolan takes advantage of the success of the videos to sell consultancies online, as he is unable to monetize the videos in Angola (the “creator fund”, TikTok’s remuneration program, does not cover the country) and seeks to attract brands for partnerships.

The audience was initially just from Angola, but expanded to other Portuguese-speaking countries (Brazilians account for half of the followers on both networks), and even Spanish, Italian and English speakers consume the content.

When he noticed, the videos were already viral. He began to be approached on the street, including to take photos, and began to see people making videos like his, even with the facial expressions of his characters.

“I believe that success has to do with the humor in the videos. In other words, in addition to the person learning how to improve their execution, they are also entertained by the interaction of the characters in the video. It’s funny because I represent both people, but they act differently. And it’s all natural, nothing exaggerated, it’s more or less the way personal trainers really act when they come across their student performing an exercise poorly”, he says.
