Manaus (AM) – The Amazonas Theater could be recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The first step towards preparing the monument’s candidacy will be taken between the 13th and 15th of December, when the first mobilization workshop takes place at the Provincial Palace, Praça Heliodoro Balbi, Center of Manaus. The event, open to the public, starts this Wednesday (13th), at 2pm. Theatro da Paz, in Belém (PA), is also competing for the title.

Maximum symbols of the rubber cycle in the region, the theaters in Belém and Manaus represent the arts, architecture and history of the Amazon, and the region’s relationship with the economy and international geopolitics between the 19th and 20th centuries.

The mobilization workshop involves the governments of the states of Amazonas and Pará, city halls of Manaus and Belém, representatives of civil society, researchers and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan), which must coordinate the candidacy process and present it. there, representing Brazil, to the UNESCO World Heritage Center.

The opening, this Wednesday (13), will feature the presentation of concepts, principles and procedures for applying for World Heritage status. Next, the protection, conservation and management requirements of Teatro Amazonas and Theatro da Paz will be exposed. During the week, the program continues with technical visits and discussions to prepare the actions planned in the coming years.

The Amazonas Theatre, listed as the first monument in Manaus by Iphan, has a history of 127 years. “The Amazonas Theater is a symbol of the national modernization process, driven by the rubber cycle, reflecting European influence through an eclectic aesthetic pattern with architecture that incorporates indigenous elements and references from regional flora and fauna”, states the Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy of Amazonas, Marcos Apolo Muniz.

For Pará’s secretary of culture, Úrsula Vidal, the recognition of Theatro Nossa Senhora da Paz values ​​the space and the promotion of arts with a planetary dimension.

“The candidacy for UNESCO recognition of these two extraordinary architectural heritages, in the heart of the urban Amazon, has more than symbolic value for Brazil. Our region will host COP 30, in 2025, and tourism will receive a significant boost. The two concert halls are already a cultural reference in the Amazon, within Brazil”,
