Amazonas has only 123 cardiology specialists, study shows

The survey of professionals in the area was carried out in a study carried out by the AMB and the Faculty of Medicine of USP

Manaus (AM) – The North region has the lowest number of Cardiology specialists in the country. This is what the study entitled “Medical Demography in Brazil 2023” shows, carried out by the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP).

Of the 20,324 professionals registered in Brazil, only 3.1% are in the North region. There are 9.7% in the Midwest, 17% in the South, 17.02% in the Northeast and 53% in the Southeast. Still according to the survey, Amazonas has only 123 cardiologists registered with the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM).

The coordinator of postgraduate studies in Cardiology at IPEMED/Afya, physician Tiago Bignoto, considers that to reduce the lack of professionals in the area, in the North region, one of the solutions is postgraduate studies. In addition to qualifying the student for the title test, the postgraduate course increases the salary of general practitioners by around 30%, allowing them to expand their range of professional care, right after graduation.

The specialization course in Cardiology, according to him, is already being offered by IPEMED, Afya’s continuing education brand, the largest ecosystem of medical education and digital solutions in Latin America.

According to Tiago Bignoto, Clinical Cardiology is the specialty with one of the highest demands in the country. Professionals with this training can work in outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, intensive care units, infirmaries and intervention rooms.

Cardiovascular diseases

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers cardiovascular diseases among the main causes of death in the world, currently reaching 30% of cases. The two main occurrences are Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) and Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI).

Cardiology is the clinical specialty that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases related to the heart and circulatory system. Factors such as obesity, physical inactivity and smoking contribute to heart disease becoming more and more frequent. This whole scenario significantly increased the importance of medical knowledge directed to the area.

Doctor Tiago Bignoto points out that the specialty is experiencing a true revolution, with increasingly sophisticated diagnostic methods.

“These are new interventionist methods, which bring therapeutic possibilities to many individuals who are routinely referred for palliative care. This drastically changes the way Cardiology is done, both for doctors and patients. Given this scenario, it is necessary that more professionals are prepared to meet the demand”,
