First, he notes that the uniqueness of the trip also comes from the fact that not just anyone enters Antarctica. “It is an international military base, therefore it is necessary to have a special authorization, which in this case was from the Brazilian Navy, as our country is a signatory to the cooperation protocol of several countries that maintain scientific bases in the extreme south of the planet ”reports Glaucous, who is the president of Soamar-AP, the Friends of the Navy Society in Amapá, an entity that brings together civil and military personalities who are holders of the Friend of the Navy Medal.
He had to go to Rio de Janeiro, at the Galeão Air Force Base. From there, on board a Brazilian Air Force Hercules C-130 plane, it was a five-hour flight to Punta Arenas (Chile), where a technical stop was made to refuel and board equipment and other means that guarantee survival and the minimum of comfort in Antarctica, where military personnel and researchers from universities all over the country spend months on end. Another hour and a half to the base in Antarctica – 1,500 km on average.
