AM Government campaign seeks to raise awareness about the disease

Manaus (AM) – The Alfredo da Matta Foundation (Fuham), an institution linked to the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), joined the “My Second Skin” campaign, created by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), with the aim of raising awareness about psoriasis. The campaign seeks to highlight that psoriasis is treatable and is not contagious, in addition to combating incorrect information about the disease. The activities culminated on the 29th of this month, World Psoriasis Day.
Member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), doctor Mônica Santos, from the Fuham clinical team, highlights that information is a powerful weapon against the social impacts suffered by psoriasis patients. “We always reinforce awareness campaigns. Psoriasis is not contagious, you cannot catch psoriasis from anyone. It is a genetic predisposition and the fact of having this stigma greatly interferes with the patient’s quality of life”, she reinforces.
Relationship with stress
The Fuham dermatologist also explains that the appearance of psoriasis symptoms in a person can occur during an imbalance in the person’s emotional state. “For the development of injuries and the typical clinical picture, there are triggers that are cofactors that we call. One of them is emotional stress of any kind. It’s the stress of everyday life, loss of a family member, unemployment, debt, things that affect a person’s emotional state that worsen psoriasis. As psoriasis worsens, the person also becomes psychologically worse. Then, it creates a vicious cycle”, explains Mônica Santos.
The doctor’s explanation coincides with the story of Elenilda Gama, who is undergoing permanent treatment for psoriasis. She discovered the disease about 26 years ago, when she became pregnant with her first child and then went through a marital separation process. “I no longer had the desire for anything. For someone who lived an active life, having a job, being a housewife, that completely stopped me. I didn’t know what psoriasis was. When I discovered what it really was, I started seeing a dermatologist and completely changed my life”, declares Elenilda.
Affordable medicine
The treatment of psoriasis is based on the severity of the lesions presented by the patient. For milder cases, the disease is treated with topical medication (ointments). In more complex cases, the medication is administered orally or injected, which are called systemic medications. All medications are available on the public network and can be collected at SUS units specialized in dermatological treatment.
Life changing
Reserve soldier Benedito Caldeira discovered psoriasis while on active service. He thought that the skin manifestations were linked to his military activity in the Amazon jungle. He says he saw a few doctors, but only reached a definitive diagnosis when he was seen by a specialist at the Alfredo da Matta Foundation.
Once treatment began, he also discovered that it was not enough to just take the prescribed medication. It was necessary to have concrete life attitudes that avoided emotional trigger moments. “If you undergo the appropriate treatment, you will see an extraordinary improvement. Today, I can say that I am a happy person, but I had to give up many vices and excesses in the life I led”, stated Caldeira.
Numbers
Data from the Fuham Department of Disease Control and Epidemiology show that, from 2012 to 2022, 3,472 cases of psoriasis were recorded by the foundation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that 3% of the world’s population, that is, 125 million people, suffer from the symptoms of psoriasis. In Brazil alone, this number would reach 5 million patients.
