indigenous teaching

The Tukano dance workshop; and the Matses language workshop start this week, from 8 to 12

Manaus (AM) — In the month of Indigenous Peoples, the training project “Aldeia Manaó” arrives at the Municipal Integrated Teaching Center – CIME Draª Viviane Estrela Marques Rodella, located in the North Zone of Manaus, with workshops, lectures and conversation circles about knowledge of the original peoples, such as dances, languages and indigenous tradition.

The Tukano dance workshop, taught by indigenous artist Dhuígo Tukano; and the Matses language workshop, taught by workshop leader Nakua Mayoruna, start this week, from the 8th to the 12th, in the morning and afternoon shifts. The other activities continue throughout the month of April.

The project aims to encourage integration between children, adolescents and teachers on ancestral knowledge, promoting this process of introducing indigenous education, together with collaborators, such as researchers, activists, artists and historians who are part of eight peoples, namely : Sateré-Mawé, Marubo, Tukano, Tikuna, Matses, Desssana, Karãpana and Baré.

New ways of understanding

For CEMI manager Dr. Viviane Estrela Marques Rodella, professor Anderson Gamaro, the project is also based on the need to demystify what is told throughout history and presents new ways of understanding indigenous culture.

“Indigenous knowledge is the references of our culture, it can help children in the formation of new subjects, with a more specific vision of what our ancestors experienced since the arrival of the colonizers in the territory we live in. They certainly expanded the understanding of our educators so that work with children is carried out using the most current facts, which are often not told in the history of original peoples”,

he states.

Conceived by multi-artist and cultural manager Francis Baiardi, with the proposal of Potira Baré, this project is included in the Funarte Retomada 2023 — Dance notice.

“With the project I want to generate an impact in order to bring reflections, debates and exchange of knowledge that contribute to a more conscious society in relation to original peoples, reverberating the voice of experts and protagonists of their own stories, as well as of this project, bringing with the workshops an environment of respect and appreciation of our culture”,

highlights the proposer.

Tukano dance workshop

In total, the project has six workshops — each lasting a total of 20 hours, two lectures and a round table. All training activities will be carried out by indigenous professionals. Artist Dhuígo Tukano tells how she will bring knowledge about her people’s dance to the classroom in this first week of the project.

“I will explain the meaning of each instrument, I will have an exchange with them about instrumentation, and then I will do a brief practice. This knowledge of the dance is mostly done by the Tukano men, the indigenous women complement the dance, and follow the rite with our warriors. So my workshop will be a little theoretical and a little practical, with the instrumentation, the meaning, at which parties we use it, at which parties we dance, etc.”,

reveals.

For Francis, the “Aldeia Manaó” project is a transformative experience. “I hope that we can plant the seed, and that this seed will multiply within the school, society, the city. And that we understand that the Nheengatu language, an indigenous language, is as important as knowing the foreign language, English, Spanish. That a Tukano dance is as much or greater in significance as a classical dance“, highlights.

“I think that the way Amazonian bodies are built is different from bodies in the southeast, the way we move is peculiar, so not having a Tukano dance within universities? Being taught in institutions, being taught in training courses. So this is a project also made for us to reflect on this place as researchers, teachers and dance and art educators”, he adds.
