The vice-president and minister of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), announced this Monday (19) the 21 civil society institutions that will make up the National Council for Industrial Development ( CNDI). The entity is linked to the Presidency of the Republic and is chaired by the MDIC.

The collegiate will also be composed of 20 ministries, in addition to the BNDES. Created in 2004, the council had not been working for seven years. The objective of the CNDI is “to elaborate a new industrial policy for Brazil – innovative, sustainable, competitive and with social responsibility”, informed the ministry. The first meeting will take place next month.

The institutions that will form part of the Council are:

  • Brazilian Food Industry Association (Abia);
  • Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim);
  • National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea);
  • FarmaBrasil Group;
  • Brazilian Plastic Industry Association (Abiplast);
  • Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC);
  • Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries (Abdib);
  • Brazilian Electrical and Electronics Industry Association (Abinee);
  • Institute of Studies for Industrial Development (IEDI);
  • Brazilian Association of the Semiconductor Industry (Abisemi);
  • Association of National Technological Development and Innovation Companies – P&D Brazil;
  • Brazilian Machinery and Equipment Industry Association (Abimaq);
  • Embraer SA;
  • Association of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Technologies Companies – Brasscom;
  • Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica);
  • Single Workers’ Central (CUT);
  • Union Force;
  • General Union of Workers (UGT);
  • National Confederation of Industry (CNI);
  • Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram); It is
  • Brazil Steel Institute.

The ordinance published this Monday also defines a list of 16 institutions invited to participate in the CNDI meetings, but without voting rights, such as the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese); Gerdau SA; Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea); Petrobras; Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil; between others.

The council should begin by debating a set of seven macro challenges to be faced: sustainable and digital agro-industrial chains for food and nutrition security; resilient health complex to ensure population access; sustainable infrastructure for productive integration; Brazilian industry for the digital economy; decarbonisation of industry, enabling the energy transition and bioeconomy; technologies and assets critical to national sovereignty and defense; and sustainable housing and mobility for well-being in large cities.
