The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) ordered the suspension of exhibitions, tournaments, fairs and events involving birds. The rule applies throughout the national territory from January 2nd, and was published this Friday (22nd) in the Official Gazette of the Union. According to the ordinance, from January onwards, this type of event can only be carried out with the authorization of the Veterinary Service of each state. An assessment of the epidemiological situation in the federation unit and a biosecurity plan must also be carried out by the event organizers. According to the ministry, the measure aims to prevent and control the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza. As of Friday (22), 151 positive cases of wild birds, subsistence birds and mammals infected with the virus had been recorded in Brazil this year. Since May, the Ministry of Agriculture declared a zoosanitary emergency, which was extended for another 180 days on the 7th. According to the ministry, the extension is to “prevent the disease from reaching subsistence and commercial poultry production, as well as to preserve fauna and human health”. To date, the country has not confirmed cases of the disease on farms engaged in large-scale trade. Therefore, the government states that there is no risk in consuming meat and eggs.
