After an opinion from the AGU, Lula’s team sees the possible release of oil research in Foz do Amazonas

AGU’s opinion admits the release of oil exploration before the completion of the environmental assessment of the area. The issue divides the Lula government. The environmental wing is against oil exploration in the Amazon region, especially at a time when the Lula government itself is seeking to resume the leading role in the global discussion of climate change. Another wing defends research to ensure an energy transition for Petrobras – and to take advantage of oil that is already being explored by neighboring countries on the equatorial margin. “Ibama must grant the license for research, just research, but with very tough conditions, several conditions, which Petrobras will have to show that it is capable of fulfilling in order to carry out the research. If Petrobras proves that it can comply, and discovers that it is worth exploring for oil in the region, then an AAAS will be necessary”, a Lula advisor told the blog.
