‘Affection makes all the difference’

“Being able to go to the beach is priceless”. The phrase is from a São Paulo da Garoa, who lives the enchantment provided by the geography and cadence of Rio de Janeiro. Criolo, who exploded singing the non-existence of love in “essepê”, is in love with “errejota”. He does shows in the city this Friday and Saturday at the very Carioca Circo Voador, followed by a presentation in the middle of Carnival, and ends up singing and parading in Sapucaí.

“Everything is special in Rio de Janeiro. With solutions or problems, everything makes the moment magical. Because the people of Rio are fascinating”, the rapper dissolves.

The Criolo season in Rio is part of the promotion of the latest work, “Sobre Viver”. The title that gives the album its name was not a random choice. Criolo has been surviving and it is not new.

First, the persistence in making art when daily bread was no guarantee. When it became reality, already in maturity, success arrived legitimizing his words and rhymes. Survival, however, became even more bitter after losing her sister, Cleane Gomes, aged 39, to Covid-19, in 2021.

“The mourning extends and has no end in sight for me, my parents and the whole family for our irreparable losses. So, the opportunity to work filled with so much affection makes all the difference. We know that everything changes in relation to the feelings that visit us, but we never know the exact time for that. There is an autonomy of emotion that does not belong to a clock or ruler”, he evaluates.

In “Sobre Viver” mourning is sung. As well as faith and religiosity very present.

“Our people are full of faith that manifests itself in different ways. The issue is that religions of African origin continue to be demonized and people are being persecuted. Celebrating our history and ancestry, using this album and its beautiful songs as a tool, has become urgent for our people. Our culture is very rich. What would become of the brand Brazil without our religiosity, because in the strength of faith we create incredible paths for better days. My mother is of great faith, as are so many mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, that It’s a beautiful Brazil!” reflects Criolo.

The rapper continues to poke at the wound and pull triggers on inequalities in all spheres. The latest clip released, “Blacks Earning Money is Too Inconvenient”, speaks for itself.

“It’s a dialogue between someone who feels firsthand that in Brazil you’re worth what you have with a person who has always had everything and doesn’t understand what it means to fight for money and its function to bring better living conditions to your family. And it suggests thinking about how get out of this cycle knowing that we are, in some way, all dependent on the global economic mode that dictates what should and what should not be done between nations”, he justifies.

Criolo knows well how this (dis) conversation is. At the age of 47, he only experienced what was defined as success ten years ago, when he won awards with “No love in SP”. “When I wrote that there is no love in São Paulo, it was about the heart of the city’s owners, who treat, especially the residents of places that are the same as where I came from, like garbage”, he shoots.

The pressure to “make it work” came from home, from the concern of his mother, a poet, and his father, a former metalworker:

“Being successful in music didn’t exist from 1987 until 2010, that’s really too far away. There was a failure in the matrix, caused by a beautiful album called ‘Nó na Orelha’ and then everything changed. The charge was to get some work, whatever it was, and preferably with a formal contract, so that his mother would no longer be sleepless worrying about her son’s future. Everything came at the time it had to be. These things cannot be explained. And the future did not exist, then, at almost 40 , having this gift, we just keep thanking, thanking and thanking. There’s still so much to do and it still hasn’t happened, you know, but I’m grateful for everything and so we continue”.

Creole talks about everything. He loves words. But he suppresses them when asked about his affective life. He prefers to keep the mystery that has surrounded him for years. Passion declared even just by the city that will host him during the revelry.

“The most beautiful thing about Rio de Janeiro, before the beach and these landscapes that are understood not only by the coast, the smile, the joy, the perseverance. The creativity of the people of Rio de Janeiro is the greatest asset of the city and the state Everything is beautiful in this place!”, praises him, who sings this Friday, the 10th alongside ney Matogrosso, and on Saturday, the 11th, with Marcelo D2, both at Circo.
