AM Yanomami want to help brothers from RR with ecotourism – 03/02/2023 – É Logo Ali

Attentive and concerned about what happens to the Yanomami in Roraima, almost 1,000 kilometers away from São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), the Amazonian Yanomami are preparing to share with their ethnic brothers the know-how acquired in the implementation of the Yaripo project, which For seven years now, it has been operating access to Pico da Neblina, the highest point in the country, at 2,995 meters high, and the goal of mountaineers who wish to face the difficulties of the Amazon in its most arduous splendor.
If in the Yanomami lands of Roraima there are no iconic spots such as Pico da Neblina or even Mount Caburaí (1,465 meters), confirmed as the most extreme point in the north of Brazil, 80 kilometers from Mount Roraima, and explored for tourism by the Ingarikó ethnic group, the proposal that the amazonian brothers intend to take is the implementation of a controlled visitation plan focused on anthropological observation —when visitation is controlled for small groups, generally for research—, forest trails and support for the recovery of family farming in the area degraded, something they already did in other times, when they had their share of invasion of miners.
“We are very shocked by what happens to the relatives of Roraima”, says José Mário Pereira Gois, 51, president of Ayrca (Yanomami Association of the Cauaburis River and Affluents), who spoke to Folha via WhatsApp. “We cannot make room for invaders, because when invaders arrive they destroy the forest, water, game and fish, and leave diseases for the population, as our brothers and sisters made clear”, he adds.
Outraged by the lack of attention and the disgrace that the federal government has given the original peoples in recent years, José Mário —who was born in a village but had the opportunity to study and took the school back to his people— says that it is even difficult to think of giving advice to the brothers of Roraima for the precarious state in which they find themselves. But he cites the example of the good results obtained in his region with the implementation of the Yaripo project (wind mountain, original name of the peak of Neblina), which raised, last year, R$ 211 thousand from just the first five expeditions that followed to the mountains, one of the greatest challenges in the country due to the mixture of rivers, mud, altitude, cold, heat and a dozen more perrengues that the reader’s imagination can create.
Reopened in March 2022, the project, which includes access to Pico da Neblina, or Yaripo, as the Yanomami call it, allowed, according to José Mário, “to generate work for young people, which was well received by the elderly”. It is worth remembering that access is only allowed to three agencies duly registered with Ayrca and the environmental agencies, and that all the support and guides that lead visitors, on journeys ranging from seven to ten days depending on the unpredictable weather in the region, they are Yanomami.
“Over the course of seven years, we trained our young people to carry out the project and now we want to share this knowledge with our brothers, who will have to work a lot, but who may find in ecotourism a solution to solve their problems after the first emergency is dealt with , which does not degrade the forest or contaminate its soil and water”, says José Mário.
The accesses to Pico da Neblina from Caburaí are not the only ones exploring ecotourism in the Brazilian Amazon. In the state of Amazonas, where tourism is more consolidated, various ethnic groups have organized themselves to guide groups through the forests, on journeys of one to a few days, which may include notions of survival, camping in the forest and reconnaissance of plants, in addition to visiting villages. and social projects implemented there, some with the support of international entities. Solutions that can promote a controlled, profitable and, above all, sustainable occupation.
