Alckmin will talk to Lira to accelerate new secondary education in 2024

The vice-president of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, stated this Thursday (28) that he will speak with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, to ensure that the new secondary education project is approved urgently in 2024.

“I would say it is a good proposal, we hope that at the beginning of the year [seja aprovada]. I’m going to talk to President Lira, Arthur Lira, I think it’s a good proposal. I’m going to talk to the rapporteur, Mendonça Filho, so we can move forward with this law”, said Alckmin after meeting with the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana.

The proposal for the new secondary education was scheduled to be discussed in the plenary before the parliamentary recess, but faced resistance from government officials who did not agree with the changes presented by the rapporteur.

President Arthur Lira contradicted Planalto by putting the proposal’s urgency request to a vote, two days after the government asked to remove the request from the agenda, trying to leave the discussion for 2024. The deputies approved the urgency regime but there was no time able to vote on the project, which should be resumed in early February.

In an interview with Gazeta do Povo, rapporteur Mendonça Filho (União-PE), said that the final text of the proposal will be completed in February 2024 and that “it will depend on new negotiations”. “We have already given a lot in preserving the fundamental axes of the project, which is in relation to curricular flexibility so that young people can have a leading role in defining their educational itinerary”, declared Mendonça.

The government supporters disagree with the rapporteur regarding the proposed workload. The text sent by the government determines the increase in hours of mandatory subjects and a reduction in the workload for optional subjects from 1,200 to 600 hours. The rapporteur’s text provides for 900 hours of optional subjects.
