COP28

Governor highlighted that the State is willing to guarantee environmental conditions to make the asphalting of the highway, opened in 1976, viable

The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, highlighted this week, during a debate at the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 28, that the BR-319 highway is necessary to combat poverty and guarantee social development and that the project recovery of the highway needs to advance so that the state can escape its terrestrial isolation in relation to the rest of the country.

Wilson Lima reaffirmed that the Government of Amazonas is willing to comply with environmental conditions to make the paving project of the so-called “middle section” of BR-319 viable.

“The COP is an opportunity for us to show that it is important to protect the forest, it is important to protect the natural resources that we have, but, above all, that it is necessary to combat poverty, it is necessary to promote social development, it is necessary to protect people. Because if we don’t protect people we won’t be able to meet our goal of sustainable development”,

defended Governor Wilson Lima.

The debate “Economic transition to the Amazon: socioeconomic development with low emissions”, was promoted by the Amazônia Legal Consortium during COP-28, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. In addition to Wilson Lima, governors Helder Barbalho (Pará), who presides over the Legal Amazon Consortium, participated in the event; Gladson Cameli (Acre), Clécio Luís (Amapá), Antônio Denarium (Roraima), Marcos Rocha (Rondônia), Mauro Mendes (Mato Grosso) and Wanderlei Barbosa (Tocantins).

“You cannot build an image as a protector of the forest by bringing our population to its knees. It is not fair that the people of the state of Amazonas continue to be isolated from the rest of Brazil. And we will not allow them to prevent us from having contact with the rest of the country by road”, added Wilson Lima.

The Amazônia Legal Consortium has the mission of promoting sustainable development in the region and is made up of the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Maranhão, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins.
