There is no shortage of options for lunch in the center of São Paulo, where it is possible to eat for much less than in other neighborhoods in the capital, such as Pinheiros and Itaim Bibi. But where are the restaurants in the center that, in addition to low prices, also offer that really tasty lunch, which kills hunger and cheers the mind?

Dairy ita
No one tastes rice and beans without becoming a customer. But having lunch at this famous counter is also good for getting a taste of what the center was like in the 1950s, when the dairy opened its doors at the address it still occupies today, on Rua do Boticário. Over there, each dish costs between R$25 and R$37, but those who go in pairs and order “to share” receive two generous portions of garnish. You can have lunch at Sesc even without having a full credential, but it is only necessary to get a discount on the meal. Anyone, in fact, can try this lunch at full price (R$26 for a plate that, being so well served, is almost worth dinner as well). Just get an appointment on the Sesc website or app — vacancies for the next day always open at 2:30 pm the day before. The menu, always varied and with good vegetarian options, is announced every week on the unit’s website.
Plate Done, PPD
From the same creators of the neighbor Por a Fistful of Dollars, Prato Feito is the best choice for that day when you want something a little more sophisticated, but still within your meal ticket budget. In addition to nine different options for pies, the menu includes salads, milanesas, stroganoff and northeastern dishes such as baião de dois, chicken and couscous. Everything between R$28 and 35, with many vegan and vegetarian options.
wanderlust
Another good option for a more tidy lunch, Wanderlust serves simple dishes from R$33 and others that are much more elaborate than a pê-efe, such as angus steak with risotto or shrimp Provençal style, without adding much to the price (these the latter cost around R$50). From Monday to Friday, at lunch, you can add a starter and a dessert or espresso coffee to your main course order for an additional R$12.
Free Fair Institute
Dedicated to encouraging agroecology and family farming, the institute sells organic products directly from the producer and, at lunch, also serves meals with these same products. The menu, always vegetarian, changes every day, according to the “harvest” and the creativity of chef Marieta Diniz.
Copanzinho
It’s a handy tip for anyone who already travels around the center, but it always surprises anyone who is just passing through or visiting the region. This São Paulo classic, at the foot of the Copan, serves everything —from pastel to feijoada— and, therefore, is a great option for a group lunch respecting everyone’s wishes. The cheapest pies, with chicken or sausage, cost R$21, while the very traditional parmigiana costs R$27.
