♪ September arrived with an unprecedented single by Zeca Pagodinho, Sorriso de Criança, the artist’s first phonographic release in 2023. This is not a re-recording of the homonymous samba composed by Dona Ivone Lara (1922 – 2018) with Délcio Carvalho (1939 – 2013) and presented in the voice of Ivone in 1979 in the album entitled Sorriso de Criança. The samba released today by Zeca Pagodinho is unprecedented and is signed by Mauro Diniz, a recurring composer in the singer’s repertoire since Zeca’s first solo album, published in 1986. The inspiration for Diniz to compose the samba came when the sambista watched a an advertisement for the Criança Esperança project (Globo). The recording of the samba Sorriso de Criança was made with the participation of the children’s choir of the Zeca Pagodinho Institute, located in Xerém, a neighborhood in the Rio de Janeiro municipality of Duque de Caxias (RJ), where Zeca has roots. The lyrics of Sorriso de Criança claim education and safety for children, touching on the issue of daily violence in peripheral communities, where bullets fired at random by police officers often take the lives of innocent children in an intolerable social situation.
