Xis seeks visibility in an album with ‘poetic positivity’ and a mix of rap with funk and forró

♪ Two months away from turning 51, on November 24th, Marcelo Santos – the São Paulo rapper known in the 1990s with the stage name Xis – is still most (re)known for the hit Us mano e as mina, a song presented by the artist 24 years ago on the album Chega comofor (1999). The fourth album in Xis’ solo discography, in rotation since August 25th, Invisível Azul is the rapper’s attempt to take a step forward in his recording career to gain more visibility in the current hip hop scene. “The invisible thing (in the album title) is how I felt and feel on several fronts, as a hip hopper, as a citizen, as an artist. But blue means everything is fine, even with the difficulties that life imposes on us”, explains Xis. With the touch of KL Jay in the scratches, the album Invisível azul mixes rap with northeastern music in Cutuco di Bituca and connects MCs from São Paulo (SP) and Santos (SP) on the track Em casa, recorded with the support of DJ Will (from group 5 to 1, godson of Racionais MC’s), Ice Dee and MC Caiçara. The repertoire also includes the songs Arquiteto da cabeza (an acid jazz funk with bubblegum riff in the style of Lenny Kravitz, in Xis’ definition), Complexo Conflict (breakbeat recorded with DJ RM and Angolan rapper Lukeny Bamba Fortunato), Gostou do meu rap (funk-rap in which the artist mentions the influential dance of the pioneering team Chic Show) and Positividade poética (a trap reggae R&B with a festive style, in the rapper’s opinion). On the album, the artist rewinds A vida é sua, a rap in which Xis talks with the members of the original formation of the group Amigos Friends. The first rap song sung by Xis, in 1988, A vida é sua gained the first studio record by the artist on the album Invisível azul. The musical production of the album Invisível azul was orchestrated by Xis with André Abujamra, DJ Will, Gás, Otávio Carvalho – responsible for mixing – and Wendell Benjamin.
