World’s first baby born after uterus transplant

Sweden – He was born on the 25th of May, a baby carried by a uterus that had been transplanted by robots. This is the first baby born after the procedure, a boy, he came into the world healthy, in Sweden through a planned cesarean section, the mother and the donor are doing well.

The surgery was considered a breakthrough in medicine, as robotic uterus transplantation is more precise and less invasive than surgery performed by doctors and has proven to be effective in maintaining a pregnancy. The mother is 35 years old and the uterus donor is a member of the family.

The transplant represents a further development of uterus transplantation surgery that began with the open surgery technique in Sweden in 2012. The work is led by Mats Brännström, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, and gynecologist and physician senior consultant at the University Hospital.

“This is the 14th baby born in Sahlgrenska Academy’s womb transplant project and more births are expected this summer. The research project continuously assesses numerous variables in donors, recipients and children after uterine transplantation, following the operation for several years afterwards. All of this is done to maximize the effectiveness of the operation and minimize side effects on patients.”
