The filmmaker had already cast Grant as the villain in his celebrated “Paddington 2” (2017), one of the great roles of the 63-year-old actor’s current post-“galance” phase, which is more cynical and surly. But it wasn’t an automatic choice. While writing the script, King drew inspiration from previous projects to understand the Oompa-Loompas, which don’t have much dialogue. The answer came in the work published by Roald Dahl in 1964. “In the book, there are some very long, page-long songs, written in verse. I read them and reread them. They are so funny and sarcastic and cynical, and they kind of have a pleasure happy with the misfortune of the spoiled children who are visiting the factory”, says King in an interview with g1.
