The City Hall also announced on Thursday (09/02) that restaurants and bars would have to close at 2:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays and no new visitors would be allowed in the old quarter of the city after 1:00 am. Currently, the sale of alcohol in shops, liquor stores and cafes in the Red Light District is illegal from Thursday to Sunday after 4pm. Now, the council will ask sellers to completely remove alcohol from their display windows during this time, or hide them. It is illegal to consume alcohol in most public spaces in Amsterdam. But residents complain that such sites attract street hustlers and that drug and alcohol abuse is driving up crime rates. Under current Dutch law, it is a crime to possess, produce or traffic drugs. However, the Dutch have a “tolerance policy” that allows coffee shops to sell cannabis under strict conditions. One such condition is that the cafes do not cause any nuisance and the government has ordered them to stop attracting foreign drug users.
