Vita and Isma talk about the ‘exciting’ partnership with the singer and the difficulty of being successful as a transvestite: ‘We see few of us in the mainstream earning the real salaries they deserve’. The Irmãs de Pau, a duo from the West Zone of São Paulo, were responsible for giving a new face to the song “Merretida”. But after all, who are they? Vita Pereira, 26 years old, and Isma Almeida, 25 years old, spoke to g1 on Friday (28th), while celebrating the release of the album. “We’re already drinking,” said Isma. They started to gain fame with the song “Shambaralai”. Despite the name, the duo is not formed by blood sisters. “We like to use the term, precisely because many of us, especially transvestites, are often unable to really have protection and support from our family. In our friends, me in Vita and Vita in me, we manage to find a brotherhood. We take that with us. for all LGBTQ+ people that we can come together to create our emotional bonds”. The two met at school and became close during high school occupations, in 2015, when students protested against the school reorganization promoted by the government of SP, which at the time was managed by the current vice president Geraldo Alckmin. The change provided for the division of schools by cycles, in addition to the transfer of students and the closure of more than 90 schools. “We studied at the same school unit, in Barueri, and political movements took place on issues of transphobia at the school, mainly on Vita, when the secondary occupations happened, we occupied a school together and spent two weeks together, developing issues about education and LGBTQ+ in the school environment”, recalls Isma. Isma says that after the occupations they never separated again, only during college, but got together again to form the Wooden Sisters. “We started in music through the education process. The pedagogical process of peripheral aesthetics, especially the aesthetics of Brazilian whore brought us together, created our brotherhood. the country was passing and so were we, in our hood, in our family environment, and we felt the need to produce healing processes”, says Vita. The duo says that before entering the world of music, they already worked in the field of arts, in cinema, in fashion and in the visual arts. “The pandemic was our need to join a work that we have been doing with music since our childhood with our musical taste that goes from forró to funk, from the parties we produce”, says Isma. With it, they sought to address issues such as social mobility in music production. “We were transvestites from CPTM, we weren’t out, that is, we could only be transvestites inside the train, or going for a ride. So, this issue of meeting to occupy the city and go in search of sociability spaces was very important musically for us”, says Isma. “We did a remix with Pabllo, you know? It’s very emotional. We’re here in the hood, sitting with a cup in our hand [bebendo], there are many people who are passing by on the street and have no idea that we are going through this process. We have a job with the biggest artist representing the LGBTQ+ scene in the world. It’s a lot.” Since 2022, the duo started to play shows and participate in events. Despite this, they face difficulties in making a living from music. “We earn a little money, we gain recognition, but it’s not enough to be able to produce more material of quality to feed our career”, explains Vita. “We travel all over Brazil, we go to all the states and we are recognized in different spaces, on the train, on the bus, here in our hood, but we are naturally on a limit, even where we can reach marked by society”, completes Isma. “It seems that it is something much more difficult, that’s why we see few of us in the mainstream, earning real salaries that they need and deserve. We deserve a worthy value and that is a touch for businessmen, event producers and people who deal with music. Everything was done in a totally collaborative way, we always exchanged beat and lyric ideas on Whatsapp until we had the result”, says Gabriel. In addition to the Irmãs de Pau and Cyberkills, Pabllo worked with funk artist MC Naninha, Ramemes and Pedro Sampaio.
