WhatsApp launched this Tuesday (25) a new mode that allows you to connect up to four cell phones to a single account. The feature has been available to testers since April, and will roll out to all users in the coming weeks.
The function, called companion mode, will be available on Android and IOS devices, operating systems for iPhones and iPads.
The feature went into testing only for the Android version on April 10, according to information from the specialized website WABetaInfo. Testers, however, were able to use an Android phone to log into accounts used on iPhones.
To link a second Android device to WhatsApp account, testers need to follow these steps:
- On your second phone, download WhatsApp Messenger (Google Play and App Store) or WhatsApp Business (Google Play and App Store).
- On the app account login screen, select the ellipsis (“…”) button in the upper right corner of the app screen and select the “Connect to a device” option
- Open WhatsApp on your primary device, go to “Settings” and select “Connected Devices”
- Point the device at the QR Code displayed on the secondary cell phone screen
The process is similar to connecting to WhatsApp Web. The limit of four devices connected to a single profile in the application is also valid for accessing computers via the internet.
In a statement, WhatsApp says it will launch an alternative way to connect to complementary devices in the coming weeks. “The user will be able to enter their phone number into WhatsApp Web to receive a unique code and use it to allow the device to connect, rather than having to scan a QR code.”
Connecting WhatsApp to a new phone syncs chat history across all linked devices.
Each linked phone connects to WhatsApp independently to ensure end-to-end encryption of personal messages, media and calls. If the main phone is inactive for a long period of time, WhatsApp disconnects all companion devices automatically.
Other devices connected to the account can still manage broadcast lists and post status updates.
